Acupuncture: Natural Healing, Alternative Medicine

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine that has been practiced for centuries. It involves the insertion of fine, sterile needles at specific points to assist in re-balancing disharmonies in the body. Acupuncturists use techniques such as cupping, Gua Sha, Tui Na, and mild electric stimulation to help promote Qi (chi) and blood flow to assist your body in healing itself.

What will happen during my acupuncture treatment?
You will be asked to answer questions about your health concerns, medical history, lifestyle, diet and overall functioning. A diagnosis will be made based on these answers and an exam using techniques specific to Oriental Medicine, such as tongue and pulse diagnosis.

Treatments will include the placement of fine, sterile needles at certain points on the body. These points best relieve your symptoms and correct any underlying imbalances as determined by your diagnosis. You may also receive treatments in the form of Gua Sha (skin rubbing techniques), Tui Na (a form of massage), Cupping (suctioned to the skin at stationary points or used for massage), and electric stimulation (mild to relieve pain and assist healing).

Your first visit will take up to 90 minutes. Follow up treatments are generally 30-60 minutes long, and you may require several visits to complete your treatment. After this you may decide to continue with monthly or seasonal treatments to keep your body healthy and in balance.

What does it feel like?
You may feel slight pressure when a needle goes in. The area may tingle, feel numb, itch, or be a little sore which is a sign that the energy flow, or chi, has been accessed. After the needles have been placed, you begin to feel an overall sense of relaxation and you become aware of a heaviness or tingling flow to certain portions of your body. The needles remain in while you relax for 20-30 minutes. Afterwards, you will feel refreshed as if you've had a nap.

What is acupuncture used for?
Acupuncture is used to relieve pain and treat certain health conditions. It can be used by itself or as part of a treatment program. Studies have found promising results for the use of acupuncture to treat nausea and vomiting related to pregnancy, chemotherapy, and post surgery pain.
